Cookies

What are cookies?

A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user’s computer. There are two main kinds of cookies – session cookies and persistent cookies. Session cookies are stored in your internet browser’s memory and disappear when you close your browser – they can also timeout after prolonged user inactivity. Persistent cookies are written to a text file and on stored on the user’s hard drive for an extended period of time. Persistent cookies can be removed by following Internet browser help file directions.

What kind of cookies does the UC Davis Bookstore use?

The UC Davis Bookstore uses session cookies. We use session cookies to store information such as items in your shopping cart, whether or not you have logged in to your account, etc. As these are all session cookies they terminate as soon as you close all open windows of your browser. By allowing us to set a session cookie, you would not have to log in with a password more than once, thereby saving time while on our site. If you decide to reject the cookie, you may still use our site. The only drawback to this is that you will be limited in some areas of our site. For example, you will not be able to place items in a shopping cart or place orders on our site.

Statistical Information About Your Visit

When you visit our website, our computers may automatically collect statistics about your visit. This information does not identify you personally, but rather identifies a visit to our site. We may monitor statistics such as how many people visit our site, the user’s IP address, which pages people visit on our site, and which browsers people use. We use these statistics about your visit for aggregation purposes only. These statistics are used to help us improve the performance of our website.

Secure Access

The UC Davis Bookstore safeguards customer information from unauthorized access to the best of our ability.

When our website asks users to enter sensitive information (such as credit card number and/or student ID number), that information is encrypted and is protected using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) software. The UC Davis Bookstore has a SSL certificate issued by GeoTrust, Inc.

We reveal only the last four digits of your credit card number when confirming an order. Of course we transmit the entire credit card number to the appropriate credit card company during order processing.

It is important for you to protect against unauthorized access to your account (password) and your computer. The best way to protect against unauthorized access to your account is to close all open browser windows on your computer, once you are finished using the UC Davis Bookstore website.
